The rescue of the crew of the missing Titan submarine presents several challenges, as the submersible is located 3,800 meters (12,500ft) below the surface on the seabed, which is too deep for most remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to reach.

Even if the submersible is located, a successful rescue would require ROVs capable of allowing operators on the surface a clear view of the submersible’s location, any obstacles that may be present, and where to attach cables capable of lifting it thousands of meters through the water.

The design of the submersible means that only those outside the vessel can unseal it, so regardless of whether it rises to the surface or not, the passengers will require outside help to escape. Recovering the missing Titan submersible and bringing its crew to safety in time using the latest advanced deep-sea rescue equipment would be an extremely difficult task.

The crew's estimated oxygen supply was expected to run out just before 7:10 a.m. ET on Thursday. Rescuing the five people from the sub would be another challenge entirely.
